Problem

The Rice Muslim Student Association's brand identity lacked a cohesive visual connection to both its cultural roots and the broader Rice University community, resulting in merchandise that failed to resonate with members or foster a strong sense of unified belonging.

Solution

We redesigned the MSA logo to thoughtfully integrate Rice's iconic sallyport architecture—itself inspired by Islamic design—creating a meaningful bridge between campus identity and Muslim heritage, then applied this refreshed brand to a survey-informed merchandise line that drove 64.9% increase in sales through embroidered crewnecks that members genuinely wanted to wear.

User Research

Surveying Students

Surveys were given to the student association of about 300 members, asking which merchandise apparel items they would likely buy.

Pre-Sale Survey

Students filled out the form, allowing for a trend to be discovered of the most favored items and sizes among the student body. Furthermore, this informed the number of extras of each merch item that were ordered, to maximize the profits while maintaining an affordable price range for the college students.

What Inspired the Logo?

MSA Shodown Event held in front of Sallyport of Lovett Hall

The idea for the Muslim Student Association logo was sparked by the college's shared passion for its iconic sallyport, the entrance to Lovett Hall, a popular building on Rice University's campus. The recognition of Lovett Hall's architecture, paying homage to Islamic architecture through its intentional details designed by Ralph Adams Cram in 1912, allowed for the perfect opportunity for the club to have this dedication illustrated in its logo.

Merchandise Selections

Inspired by a classic country club look, the MSA 2024-2025 merch design was aimed to fit the style of the newest merchandise apparel: embroidered crewnecks. Based on the surveys that were sent to members of the student association, 64.9% of pre-sale items sold were embroidered crewnecks.
